A Hemi Hybrid?

Chrysler has announced its upcoming 09 Dodge Durango Hemi hybrid and Chrysler Aspen Hemi hybrid models.  A Hemi Hybrid you say?  Yes that is what we thought.

Both models will get a new hybrid power train using the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 with a system that shuts off cylinders under light-loads. Combined, the Hemi and electric motor develop 385 hp. Both models have four-wheel drive, through a single-speed transfer case.

Although the tow rating for the non-hybrid models is higher at 8,950 pounds, the hybrid model is still approved for trailer towing with a 6,000-pound rating, but with a much improved fuel economy.

The hybrids, which are said to deliver more than 25-percent fuel economy improvement and up to a 40-percent improvement in the city, will start arriving at showrooms in the summer of 2008.

Will the Government kill the HEMI

With the recently passed energy bill demanding that manufacturer’s meet a fleet wide requirement of 35MPG up from the 27.5 MPG of today.  This will require a annual 3.3% increase per year.

If the increases can not be met, the HEMI powered vehicles will possibly see large price increases because of fees for failing to meet a minimum MPG, or they will disappear completely, again.
